Air-Cooled Scroll Chillers

What Is an Air-Cooled Scroll Chiller?

An air cooled scroll chiller is a refrigeration system that removes heat from water or a water-glycol mixture and rejects that heat directly into the outdoor air. The chilled water produced by the system can be circulated through air handling units, fan coil units, process equipment or other cooling terminals.

Unlike a water cooled scroll chiller, an air-cooled system does not normally require a cooling tower, condenser-water pump or extensive condenser-water piping. This makes it suitable for projects requiring simplified installation, reduced water consumption and lower infrastructure requirements.

The main refrigeration component is the hermetic scroll compressor. Inside the compressor, two spiral-shaped scroll elements compress the refrigerant. One scroll remains stationary while the other moves in an orbital pattern. This provides smooth compression with fewer moving parts, low vibration and dependable operation.

A standard air cooled scroll compressor chiller can use one or several scroll compressors. A multi-scroll compressor chiller provides staged capacity control by switching compressors on and off according to the cooling demand.

More advanced systems may use an inverter scroll or variable-speed scroll compressor. An inverter scroll chiller adjusts compressor speed according to real-time cooling requirements, helping reduce power consumption during part-load operation.

01

Scroll Chiller vs Centrifugal Chiller

Scroll chillers are commonly selected for small to medium cooling capacities, modular installations and facilities with varying cooling demand. A centrifugal chiller is generally used for larger central chilled-water plants requiring significantly higher cooling capacity.

When evaluating options such as a Trane centrifugal chiller, Trane scroll chillers or modular scroll systems, the correct selection should be based on total cooling load, operating profile, plant configuration, energy efficiency, available space and maintenance requirements.

Zenvent Engineering evaluates these factors before recommending a suitable chiller configuration.

Working Principle and Main Components

An air-cooled scroll chiller operates through a closed refrigerant circuit. The refrigerant continuously absorbs heat from the chilled water and releases it into the surrounding air.

01

Refrigeration Cycle

The chiller evaporator transfers heat from the circulating chilled water to the refrigerant. The refrigerant changes into low-pressure vapour and enters the chiller scroll compressor.

The compressor increases the refrigerant pressure and temperature. The hot refrigerant then enters the air-cooled condenser, where axial condenser fans or EC condenser fans move outdoor air across the condenser coil.

Heat is released into the atmosphere, causing the refrigerant to condense into a liquid. The liquid passes through an electronic expansion valve, where its pressure and temperature are reduced before it returns to the evaporator.

This refrigeration cycle continues until the chilled-water temperature reaches the required set point.

02

Scroll Compressors

The scroll compressor is responsible for circulating and compressing the refrigerant. Depending on the system design, the chiller may include:

Hermetic scroll compressor

Fixed-speed scroll compressor

Inverter scroll compressor

Variable-speed scroll compressor

Multiple scroll compressors arranged in stages

A multi-compressor scroll chiller system can match cooling output more closely with changing demand. It can also provide operational flexibility because the remaining compressor circuits may continue operating if one circuit requires maintenance.

03

Air-Cooled Condenser

The air-cooled condenser removes heat from the refrigerant. It normally includes a condenser coil, axial condenser fan, EC condenser fan or variable-speed fan control.

A microchannel condenser may also be used to provide a compact coil arrangement and efficient heat transfer. Proper condenser selection is essential because high ambient temperatures, restricted airflow or dirty condenser coils can reduce chiller capacity and efficiency.

04

Chiller Evaporator

The evaporator transfers heat from the chilled water to the refrigerant. Common evaporator configurations include:

Brazed-plate heat exchanger

Shell-and-tube evaporator

Refrigerant-to-water plate heat exchanger

The evaporator must be selected according to water flow, cooling capacity, pressure drop, chilled-water temperature and glycol concentration.

05

Chilled-Water Circuit

The chilled-water circuit can include a primary chiller pump, chilled-water pump, buffer tank, expansion tank, isolation valves, strainers, flow switches, pressure gauges and temperature sensors.

A correctly sized buffer tank helps stabilise water temperature and prevents frequent compressor cycling when the system water volume is low.

06

Chiller Control Panel

A modern chiller control panel monitors operating temperatures, pressures, compressor status, fan speed, water flow, alarms and system safety conditions.

A PLC-controlled chiller can also support:

Automatic capacity control

Compressor staging

Electronic expansion valve control

Remote chiller monitoring

Alarm history

Operating data recording

BMS chiller integration

Modbus or BACnet communication

Scheduled start and stop functions

Zenvent Engineering can integrate the chiller with the building management system for central monitoring and operational control.

Types and Available Configurations

Zenvent Engineering provides scroll chiller solutions in different configurations to suit commercial and industrial requirements.

01

Packaged Air-Cooled Scroll Chiller

A packaged scroll chiller combines the compressor, condenser, evaporator, fans, controls and safety devices within one outdoor unit. This arrangement simplifies site installation and reduces the amount of field assembly required.

A packaged air-cooled scroll chiller is suitable for offices, hotels, hospitals, schools, commercial buildings and light industrial applications.

02

Modular Air-Cooled Scroll Chiller

A modular scroll chiller uses multiple smaller chiller modules connected to a common chilled-water system. Additional modules can be added when future cooling demand increases.

A modular air-cooled scroll chiller system provides staged capacity, operational flexibility and easier installation where access is restricted.

03

Inverter Scroll Chiller

An inverter scroll chiller varies the compressor speed according to the actual cooling load. This helps reduce frequent compressor cycling and can improve part-load efficiency.

An inverter scroll chiller installation service is particularly useful for buildings where cooling demand changes throughout the day.

Depending on the existing installation and technical requirements, project evaluations may involve systems such as an LG inverter scroll chiller, Daikin scroll chiller or other variable-capacity equipment.

04

Variable-Speed Scroll Chiller

A variable-speed scroll chiller continuously adjusts compressor operation according to the required leaving-water temperature and system demand.

A variable-speed scroll compressor chiller can provide stable temperature control for commercial comfort cooling and industrial processes where load conditions frequently change.

05

Multi-Scroll Compressor Chiller

A multi-scroll compressor chiller uses two or more compressors within one or multiple refrigerant circuits. Compressors operate in stages to provide efficient chiller capacity control.

This arrangement is suitable for facilities requiring reliable staged operation and improved part-load performance.

06

Industrial Scroll Chiller

An industrial scroll chiller is designed for process cooling applications such as machinery cooling, plastic processing, pharmaceutical production, food processing, printing, laboratories and manufacturing plants.

Zenvent Engineering can configure the system with industrial pumps, buffer tanks, stainless-steel water circuits, glycol solutions, process heat exchangers and remote monitoring controls.

07

Glycol and Low-Temperature Process Chiller

A glycol chiller uses a water-glycol mixture to achieve lower fluid temperatures and reduce freezing risk.

A low-temperature air-cooled process chiller may be required for industrial processes, cold rooms, chemical processes and specialised production equipment. The correct glycol percentage, pump selection, evaporator design and safety controls must be considered during system selection.

Benefits and Energy-Efficiency Features

A properly selected high-efficiency air-cooled scroll chiller offers several operational and installation advantages.

01

Simplified Installation

An air-cooled chiller normally does not require a cooling tower or condenser-water system. This can reduce civil work, piping complexity, water treatment requirements and installation space.

02

Efficient Part-Load Operation

Commercial and industrial cooling systems rarely operate at full load throughout the entire day. Multi-scroll and inverter scroll systems can reduce capacity during lower cooling demand.

Part-load efficiency is evaluated through parameters such as chiller IPLV and seasonal performance. Proper compressor staging, condenser fan control and chilled-water temperature management can improve overall system performance.

03

High Chiller COP

Chiller COP represents the relationship between cooling output and electrical power input. A higher chiller COP generally indicates more efficient operation under the specified conditions.

Actual efficiency depends on ambient temperature, chilled-water temperature, condenser cleanliness, water flow, compressor condition and system loading.

04

Reduced Noise and Vibration

A low-noise scroll chiller can be suitable for hotels, hospitals, offices, residential developments and other noise-sensitive environments.

Scroll compressors provide smooth compression, while EC condenser fans, acoustic compressor enclosures and variable-speed fan controls can further reduce operating noise.

05

Lower Water Consumption

Air-cooled systems reject heat directly into the atmosphere and do not depend on cooling-tower water. This makes them suitable for locations where water conservation is important.

06

Flexible Capacity Expansion

Modular scroll chillers allow the cooling system to expand as the facility grows. Additional modules can be connected to the common chilled-water network when required.

07

Low-GWP Refrigerant Options

A low-GWP refrigerant chiller can help support modern efficiency and environmental requirements. Refrigerant selection must consider system capacity, equipment availability, operating pressure, safety classification and application requirements.

Zenvent Engineering can evaluate suitable refrigerant and equipment options during the design stage.

08

Remote Monitoring and BMS Integration

A BMS-integrated air-cooled scroll chiller allows facility operators to monitor:

Chilled-water temperatures

Compressor operating status

Condenser fan status

Water flow

Operating pressures

Energy consumption

Active alarms

Maintenance requirements

Remote chiller monitoring helps improve response time and provides better visibility of the system’s operating condition.

Design, Installation and Commissioning

The performance of an air-cooled scroll chiller depends not only on the equipment but also on correct design, installation and commissioning.

Zenvent Engineering provides turnkey air-cooled scroll chiller solutions covering system planning, equipment selection, chilled-water piping, pump installation, electrical work, control integration and testing.

01

Cooling Load and Chiller Selection

Standby or redundancy requirements

Selecting an oversized chiller can cause frequent cycling and poor part-load operation. An undersized chiller may fail to maintain the required water temperature during peak demand.

02

Equipment Location and Airflow

Air-cooled chillers require sufficient clearance around the condenser coils and above the fans. Poor placement can cause hot discharge air to return to the condenser intake, increasing condensing pressure and power consumption.

Our engineers evaluate ventilation, service access, structural support, vibration isolation and noise control before finalising the installation arrangement.

03
